Dóchas Counselling

Counselling offers a safe and confidential space for you to talk through the challenges and difficulties being experienced in your life. It can help with relationship issues, work challenges, a loss you are grieving, struggles with anxiety, depression, bullying, family conflict, low self-esteem and parenting. If you are going through a challenging time in your life and you are finding it difficult to process or change, talking to an accredited counsellor can help to understand, work through and overcome these challenges.

The medical profession and general practitioners generally recommend potential counselling clients attend 6 sessions of CBT which, I believe, can do a real dis-service as 6 sessions of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is not enough to help a client heal holistically and long term. It will put a plaster over the problem but the same unhealthy patterns will likely appear again and again until the client understands what the root cause of their issues are.

CBT is a useful therapy that can help with the mind and changing thoughts but the majority of people who are experiencing struggles in life will need help from physical, emotional, mind and spiritual perspectives. Our world is emotionally dis-connected and soul sick. As well as learning how to manage the mind, emotional and soul health is key to healing and in my experience these are the elements that clients also need help with.

I also wonder if psychiatry and psychology do a dis-service with too much prescription and diagnosis when often, what people need most is another human being to talk to. The current hierarchy in the mental health profession places psychiatry at the top, psychology in the middle and counselling/psychotherapy at the bottom. Counselling and psychotherapy being the first port of call for people who go to their GP for help with their mind and emotional health can offer a natural way of healing that can be life changing and long lasting.

Healing takes time and expression. With a counsellor, you have an opportunity not just to express what’s going on and feel seen and heard, but also you have an opportunity to learn about why you are feeling the way you feel, why you are behaving a certain way, or are struggling within yourself and your life, because there is always a reason! Figuring out that reason can be and is a game changer for the healing journey that can bring lasting peace and happiness.
